The Octopies needed to figure out why their Ovens had all gone cold. They had travelled around each of their lands, explored their Ovens, and scouted out the map of the known world. They hadn’t deeply explored the frozen lands of the Arctic Crust or spent time traversing the dangerous Salt Pans. And no Octopie was foolish enough to enter The Haunted Forest. But they needed answers - and every Octopie in the Fellowship knew that there was one place they could get them...The Vapors.
The Vapors are three volcanic islands home to the mysterious Pieous and the GrandOven. With steep, jagged cliffs and rough oceans, accessing these islands by boat is not an option that any rational Octopie would take. The entry point to the Pieous is through the southernmost island. Once there, an Octopie can cross a bridge to the second island.
The Fellowship knew this, but choosing to go there wasn’t a simple decision.
The Octopies of Pieland hadn’t interacted with the Pieous since the Ovens went cold. The Fellowship’s vast explorations revealed much about the history and actions of this mysterious group. Many Octopies had already decided that the Pieous was certainly the one to blame for the cold Ovens. Others kept an open mind. But it was hard to ignore the evidence, meaning that visiting the Vapors was the essential next step.
However, it was unanimously accepted that the Pieous would not welcome them as visitors. Therefore, getting inside to talk to the Pieous would not be easy with such an intimidating fortress as their home. There was only one option - directly across the bridges that connected the islands. The Fellowship knew what this meant. After a period of silence, one of them spoke up.
“Ay. I wouldn’t blame any Octopie that chose to return home to their Slice.” said the Pierate, taking a swig of rum before carrying on. “We all know the stories. We’ve all heard of the ‘pet’ the Pieous have. Arrrr. We won’t get to the Pieous without passing the beast called… Scraps”. Fear fell across the faces of the other Octopies as the Pierate uttered the name of this beast.
After a moment of hushed murmurs, the Expiermient in the group opened its decaying piehole. “Future…uugh… important….hmph”, the Octopie paused, let out a heavy grunt, and continued. “End…grrrr… of one… no important”. The Expiermient stepped back as it finished talking, and the rest of the group looked around at each other, slowly nodding their heads in agreement.
For the first time since they had begun their adventure, they all knew exactly what the Expieriment meant. No translation from the Vampier or discussion to interpret the meaning of the grunts was needed. It was clear to the Fellowship - The future of Pieland was more important than each of them. That meant only one thing - it was time to head to the Vapors. What would happen when they got there would be in the hands of the Pieities themselves.
